Kaali Dal Recipe


Ingredients: (1 cup = 250ml)

1 cup whole black lentils
1 medium onion chopped
2 medium tomatoes in a paste
2-3 medium garlic cloves
1-inch ginger crushed
1 green chilly finely chopped
1 tsp Catch coriander powder
½ tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp Catch turmeric powder
½ tsp Catch red chili powder
¼ tsp Catch garam masala powder
1 tbsp ghee
3-3.5 cups water
Catch table salt to taste
Coriander leaves for garnishing

Accompaniments with Kaali Dal:

  • Rice
  • Roti/Paratha/Naan


  1. Soak the dal overnight.
  2. Next day, heat ghee, add cumin seeds. When they sizzle, add chopped onions.
  3. Add the crushed ginger-garlic or ginger-garlic paste.
  4. Add the spices: Catch coriander powder, Catch red chili powder, Catch turmeric powder, cumin seeds, Catch garam masala powder and the chopped green chilly.
  5. Keep stirring the masala till oil begins to separate.
  6. Add the soaked dal. Add water and Catch table salt.
  7. Cover and pressure cook till the dal is cooked well.
  8. If the dal looks thin, then simmer till it reaches the right consistency.
  9. Garnish with coriander leaves.
